The Spiel des Jahres award (Game of the Year, for you non-German speakers) is the Oscars of the board gaming community. This award, given every year, celebrates excellence in board game design. The main focus of the SdJ are family games, but special awards are also given to children’s games and “Connoisseur-Enthusiast” level games. This year’s winner – Azul by Michael Kiesling– is a beautiful tile-laying game where players compete for the finest tiles to make eye-catching patterns.
