1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

New early literacy program at the Library!

We have a new program beginning Monday, October 1, 2018! Families are invited to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is available to all families with children between the ages of birth and five years. For more information, call the Library or stop by the Children’s Desk.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

Singing songs, saying rhymes, telling stories, and playing with your child are all great ways to build their literacy skills. Visit the Library often for free programs that are fun and educational for your little one and to find great books to share with your child.

One thousand books may seem like a lot, but if you read just one book a night, you’ll meet your goal in less than three years. If you read three books a night, you could reach your goal in just one year! Repetition is important for children, so if you read the same book over and over again, you can count it each retelling. Ask our friendly staff for suggestions—we’re here to help you on your journey to 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten!

How does the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program work at Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library?

Once you register, keep track of your books on a reading record or on the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten app. At each 100 Book Milestone, visit the Library and get a sticker for our Wall of Fame. Your child will earn a prize at 100 Books, 500 Books, and at 1,000 Books.
