Oge Mora is a contemporary picture book author who has published two books so far. Her first book, Thank You, Omu!, received a prestigious Caldecott Honor Book award and made numerous annual Best Book lists. Her second book, Saturday, has already been highly praised by book review journals!
In the warm and tender Saturday, Ava’s mother works six days a week, but on Saturdays they spend the day together. Those days together are special and splendid, as they say. But one Saturday there are complications: storytime is canceled, a car splashes water on their new hairdos, and the park is too noisy. Worst of all, they catch the bus to the puppet show, but left the tickets at home. Yet they know the special and splendid thing is to spend the day together, even if they have to stop and take a deep breath sometimes.
Saturday features bright collage art with a friendly feeling of action. It’s well worth a second look at the details in the illustrations. The text has a bouncy rhythm, and in places, your child may chime in with the words.
