Book Review: Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o
Plot summary: Based partially on the author’s own childhood, Sulwe is the story of a young girl whose skin is darker than many others, including members of her family. She struggles with her self-esteem due to this and does not feel beautiful. A magical journey through the sky has a deep effect on her in this book. The book has an excellent message and beautiful illustrations.
Why the book is appealing for young readers: Self esteem is a huge issue for children and adults alike. Young readers can learn about self-acceptance and loving yourself from this story. In addition, it educates readers about racism and feelings of being the other which most children deal with regardless of their skin color. The illustrations will also appeal to young readers, as they are vivid and colorful.
