13 Aug Library Resources for Homeschoolers
Whether you’re a confident homeschooler who’s been doing it for years or a curious caregiver just starting to explore what homeschooling your child might look like, the library has resources that can support you in your efforts.
Homeschool Programs
First, from September-May we offer monthly programs specifically for homeschoolers. Typically held the second Thursday of each month, these programs cover a variety of topics from practical life skills like sewing and crafting to more academically-focused subjects like geography, ancient civilizations, and STEM.
All of the programs feature engaging, hands-on activities that bring learning to life and include options for preschoolers through upper elementary-aged children. Older and younger siblings are always welcome to attend, too! We don’t require registration, so feel free to join us when it works for your family and schedule.
J Library of Things
Our J Library of Things also includes a number of items that can be useful to homeschoolers. Mathlink Cubes and a Time Activity Set are great manipulatives that show mathematics concepts in a concrete way. A variety of Snap Circuits kits can introduce children to engineering, electricity, and circuitry in accessible ways that increase in complexity. Coding kits like OSMO and Botley teach the foundational concepts of computer programming. Puzzles and games make counting, spatial awareness, and problem-solving fun while reinforcing literacy and math skills.
Books and Digital Resources
Last but not least, our collection of books can be a great resource for homeschooling families. Whether you’re looking for reference books about how to homeschool; non-fiction books to support science, history, or social studies units; or literary classics, graphic novels, or popular fiction books to strengthen English Language Arts curriculum, we have it all!
Our collection kits are an easy way to get a lot of books on a particular subject. Simply fill out the form on our website with your topic, age of the child(ren), and any additional information you can provide, and then we’ll gather a whole stack of books in a convenient tote for you to take home.
If you’re looking for things you can use without leaving the house, our digital resources offer foreign language learning, child-friendly search engines for independent study, arts and crafts classes, and much more – all free with your PGTPL library card!
We regularly seek feedback from homeschool families about what types of programs would best meet their needs, so if there’s something you’d like us to offer, let us know!
